I promised I was going to share this story before the New Year… here it is.
When I went to NYC, I had the experience of meeting Conan O’Brien. It was an unexpected encounter and an unforgettable experience. It all began with my desire to meet Aaron Bleyaert, Conan’s blogger extraordinaire. I tried to meet him on Wednesday, the day I attended the taping at the Beacon Theatre. During all the hoopla, I didn’t get to meet Bley, so he tweeted me to come by the theater the next day.
On Thursday, I went to the city with Bley’s gift in my backpack, and after walking for an hour around the Financial District, I decided to drop by the theater and trying to meet Bley. It was past noon. No fans around, just some staff members walking out to get lunch. I waited for Bley, I asked for Bley… And suddenly Conan is out the door. I called him, but then I noticed he’s talking on the phone with a headphone, and the security guys kept him isolated while he was talking. Some people noticed he was there and took photos. I stood right by the door, waiting for him to come back in. Then a staffer* came by, and she greeted me. Just as I was explaining to her that I was there waiting for Bley, Conan went back inside. I could only whisper “oh, there’s Conan, I wish I could meet him, but he’s talking on the phone”. She left, and I stayed by the door.
Then the unthinkable happened…
Conan came out, and he approached me saying “Hi Diana”. I was in shock. How does Conan O’Brien knows my name? It doesn’t make sense!
“Do you know my name?”
“Of course, you are one of my strongest supporters!”
Then he asked me if I enjoyed the shows, he told me he had a great time (and I was standing there like an idiot staring at his eyelashes). Then he pointed to my camera and asked me if I wanted a photo. People started gathering around, and he pointed me to the door saying “Let’s go inside” and he told the security “She’s with me”. He asked the security guy to take the photo after introducing us “This is “Bob” (I don’t recall if that his name), he takes care of me; she is Diana, one of my biggest supporters”. After the photo I quickly asked if he could sign my badge (he commented “very nice”) and then he told me he had to come back inside for rehearsal. He hugged me and I ask him “Can I touch your hair?”; he responded “Of course!” and he bent his head towards me. When I touched it, he growled at me. I could only say Thanks and bye, and I exited, trembling. I stood on the corner like 10 minutes trying to figure out what happened.
BTW, I never met Bley. He looked for me while I was leaving his gift to his sister.
There it is. One of my best experiences of 2011.
*I’ll keep her name out of this tale. I’ll just let you know that everyone that works at Team Coco are wonderful.
